My Favourite Free Pattern Makes

We all love an accessible free pattern, especially when they turn out utterly beautiful and unique. I used to exclusively make free patterns when I started crochet (as many of us do), so I’ve accumulated quite a few favourites along my five year crochet journey. I started featuring free patterns on my Instagram stories but wanted to keep them all in one place.

So let’s get into it!

  1. Crochet Flowers by Lingzhi Handmade

Lingzhi very kindly shares the free YouTube tutorials for loads of gorgeous flowers. After I started making these flowers I no longer bought live flowers for the house but it still feels beautiful and decorated all the time. I also give crochet bouquets as gifts when visiting someone or for occasions. I think it would also be an amazing market item, something totally unique.

The tutorials are easy to follow but be warned they do require quite a few parts and lots of assembly… well worth it in my books though!

I used Schachenmayr Catania yarn (sport weight) and the hook size varied for each flower but it was always either 2.75mm or 3mm. For the stems I used wooden plant stakes I bought at a dollar store.

2. Potholder by MobiusGirl Design

This sweet “Margueritte” motif wasn’t designed as a pot holder/trivet (in her blog its a blanket!) but the design worked so well with a gift I was giving I turned it into a decorative potholder/trivet by using 100% cotton yarn so it was heatproof. Be careful, acrylic yarn will melt. I used Schachenmayr Catania… are you seeing a trend ;)

3. Sunburst Granny Blanket

When I made this sunburst granny blanket people went wild and I ended up getting 4 orders for the exact same blanket. There are hundreds of free patterns for sunburst granny blankets so you would just have to look up any of them to find the pattern.

My top question is always about the colour way of this blanket. The colors are Stylecraft Special Aran in: “Mushroom”, “Pale Rose” and “Cream”. The peach colour is Red Heart Soft Aran in “Melba.” I made it with a 6mm hook. I’ve found that the hook you use with sunburst grannies can be liberally sized up.

Also a word to the wise, please don’t start sunburst grannies with a MR (or any blanket for that matter). It is not strong enough and it will stretch over time and is prone to breaking. I use a chain 4 or 5 turned into a ring.

4. Crochet Trivet by Kirsten Holloway Designs

Another really special and quick project that makes a lovely gift or tabletop addition. I’m planning to make some of these for an upcoming market because they are rather quick and super useful. I love the delicate details that really elevate this one!

Also made from Schachenmayr Catania, 100% cotton yarn.

5. Granny Square Wall Hanging

There’s no pattern link for this one because its a relatively simple concept and it was free handed as I went (though if you’re interested in a pattern, let me know and I’ll write one up!). It’s just granny squares joined on the bias with the join as you go technique. I then attached it to a small dowel, working through the squares as I went. The tassels were added at the end and voila!
